Stonewall Stud pays substantial money at the Sales in order to buy good quality stock and they’re keen to target juvenile racing. There’s no doubt then that Sonofamistery’s (Sweet Lou) win today in the time honoured $60,000 Group Two Macca Lodge Kindergarten Stakes at Wyndham was a satisfying one for Steve and Amanda Telfer, the operation’s harness racing trainers.
“It was the first time we’ve won it and we’re very pleased,” Amanda said after Sonofamistery led from start to finish.
Although favourite Special Occasion came around to sit parked, he was never serious about taking up the role of pacemaker.
“I would have been happy to sit on his back because my horse has got a lot of speed. We hoped Blair would come forward (driving Special Occasion) and we’d get the trail. But that’s racing isn’t it.”
SONOFAMISTERY REPLAY
Sonofamistery peeled off his last 800 in 56.5.

“His main attribute is his high speed. To me that’s more his go at the moment. He’s always shown a little bit of ability, his trials have been really good. In his first start he went super and we don’t know what happened in his second, but his blood was a bit off.”

Amanda said Sonofamistery which was a $95,000 Sales purchase will have an easy time after today’s win.
“He’s going to head to the bigger races. This is his first trip away, he’s going to get better and he’s just a bit dumb. He pulled up on the line and Timmy said ‘I should have pulled the plugs’. I said ‘ah well, you still won so it doesn’t matter.”

The win was William’s third in the race after being successful with Messini in 2013 and First Class in 2020.
Sonofamistery’s winning margin was one and a quarter lengths from Freeze Frame with Special Occasion three quarters of a length back in third.
Sonofamistery is a half-brother to Mister Smartee which Williams drove to win at Addington in November 2022. His time for the 1980 metres of 2-19.2 was a New Zealand Two Year Old record which still stands.
In Australia Mister Smartee has only been beaten twice in sixteen starts and his last win in December was in the Group One Golden Nuggets at Gloucester Park.
