Day One of the Christchurch session at NZB Standardbred’s 2022 National Yearling Sale saw strength in the market for first season sires.
With 61 lots offered at the Sale of Trotters, the highlight of the day came when Barry Purdon and Scott Phelan purchased Lot 183 for $110,000, a filly from the first crop by Tactical Landing (USA). She is out of Petite One(NZ) (Angus Hall) and was offered by Laura Smith on behalf of Taffy’s Todd and Fleur Anderson.
“We really liked her,” said trainer Barry Purdon. “She seemed to tick all of the boxes and looked very like her grandmother Pride of Petite.”
“There are a lot of good reports towards Tactical landing, he is beautifully bred himself as an $800,000 yearling purchase.
“He is out of a great mare too and we have high hopes he will be a good stallion.”
Shortly after, Tony Herlihy of Strike Won Racing Stables purchased Lot 185 for $37,000 by fellow first season sire En Solitaire (FR) out of Moment of Beauty(NZ) (Angus Hall), offered by Macca Lodge.
Canterbury-based trainer Regan Todd also secured another Tactical Landing colt (Lot 175) for $30,000. Out of Habibti Sadie(NZ) (Pegasus Spur), the Lot was offered on account of N. Reed & S. Green.
NZB Director James Jennings was pleased with the appetite for freshmen stallions at the conclusion of the trotting session.
“It’s really good to see people putting their hands up for those first season sires. It gives a great balance to the buying bench.”
After a trying day of trading in Christchurch, Jennings commented on the results on the trotter’s session.
“I think it’s fair to say that we are a bit disappointed in the results today and we are obviously deflated that the momentum did not continue after the incredible Auckland Sale we held yesterday,”
“We need to do some good analysis to see where those flat spots were in today’s session.
“We had the obligation and privilege to offer these horses for our vendors and we want to see them get across the line, so we’ll be looking at it and working hard to find the middle ground,” Jennings said.
Day Two at Christchurch will see the Sale of Pacers commence Tuesday 15 February, with Lots 206 to 310 selling from 1PM (NZT).
Broadcasting of the Christchurch session will continue to be shown to viewers on Freeview channel 200, with coverage streamed live at nzbstandradbred.co.nz and on NZB Standardbred’s facebook page.
