The 2022/23 racing calendar has been confirmed with 974 meetings scheduled for the upcoming racing season.
TAB NZ and the three racing codes – New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing, Harness Racing New Zealand and Greyhound Racing New Zealand – have collaborated closely to produce the calendar in its final form.
A draft was shared with codes and enabled clubs to make submissions to their respective codes, before further review by TAB NZ confirmed the final number and placement of the meetings through the year.
āThe three racing codes have been understanding and obliging of TAB NZās need to meet both our servicing requirements and our statutory obligations of maximising wagering opportunities in order to maximise profitability,ā TAB NZ Dates Committee Chair Edward Rennell says.
The 2022/23 racing season will have a total of 974 meetings comprising 293 thoroughbred meetings, 249 harness meetings and 432 greyhound meetings with a total of 9,885 individual races to be run.
Renovations and track improvements taking place in the thoroughbred code at Ellerslie and Te Aroha have resulted in significant changes in the structure of northern thoroughbred meetings, with Ellerslie unavailable for the complete season. The other significant change from a thoroughbred perspective is the introduction of racing in the winter of 2023 on the third synthetic track at Awapuni.
Renovations and track improvements have also affected the greyhound code with tracks such as Hatrick Raceway in Whanganui currently unavailable. Harness racing dates are largely consistent with the current season.
