Ryal Bush trained Takeitout (Captaintreacherous) looks to be a serious contender for the $40,000 Vetsouth Equine Southern Belle Speed final at the Winton Harness Racing Club’s meeting in sixteen days.
The imposing four year old mare who’s trained by Brett Gray won her second heat of the series at Wyndham today in the hands of regular steerer Sarah O’Reilly.
O’Reilly settled Takeitout midfield in the small field of six. When Tayla Me jumped off the inside, Takeitout got onto her back. Turning in O’Reilly hooked off Tayla Me’s back and started to make ground on the leader Advance Party. In a tight finish Takeitout got in the deciding stride to beat Advance Party by half a neck with the other Gray runner Joes Rock finishing late and half a length back in third.
“I was happy with both the girls today. She (Takeitout) got on one rein a bit which is unusual. She used to run out really bad so I can take that. She liked the wet track and doesn’t mind roughing it,” Gray said.
The stable won the Southern Belle last year with Joes Rock and with she and Takeitout guaranteed a spot in the final, Gray has a strong hand to play at Central Southland Raceway in just over two weeks time.
Meanwhile Browns trainer Des Baynes dished up a master class in training when both his first starters won.
On The Wing (American Ideal) came with a late run down the outside of the track for driver Matty Williamson to win Race Three. The three year old gelding had been impressive at trials and surprised many with his $31.00 win dividend. The winning margin was two lengths.
In the very next race Snap Shot (American Ideal) in the hands of Blair Orange powered home to win on debut by one and a half lengths.
The four year old mare was bred and is owned by Baynes.
