Harness racing’s Trainer’s Premiership leaders Steve and Amanda Telfer head to Kaikoura on Monday (Oct. 31) with four genuine chances.
Cloudy Bay (Bettor’s Delight) faces a small even field and through the preferential barrier system draws the outside of the front row in Race Six.
“1900 metres, drawn eight around Kaikoura is going to be tricky. She’s racing well, she’s adaptable, got good gate speed, plus she can do a bit of work in her races so Tim will have plenty to think about. The mare is racing well,” Steve said.
The NZB New Zealand Yearling Sales Series Aged Classic has attached twelve runners. The Telfers have the lightly raced Fernleigh Cash (Bettor’s Delight). He’s won five of his eleven starts and has done all his racing in the North Island.
“He’s a nice horse who’s been sparingly raced. He had one start this time in and blew out over the last bit. He’s come south and had a nice quiet trial on Tuesday at Rangiora. He’s a good beginner from the stand which will be crucial and he’s up to most of those. He’s a big strong horse, a good stayer who’s going to get through to a fairly good grade.”
In the Alabar Kaikoura Cup Allamericanlover (American Ideal) has a good draw to work with. From eighteen starts she’s never run out of the money and a last start second to one of the New Zealand Cup favourites BD Joe points to her being a good chance in the Group Three feature.
“She’s very honest. We picked this race out for her being a 2400 metre stand. Normally she’s very quick away, I think she’ll find herself in the first couple and that’s crucial around Kaikoura. She’s up to racing the best ones.”
In the last, two year old filly Sweet Diamond (Sweet Lou) fronts up for the Telfers. She too is a recent addition to the South Island branch of Stonewall Stud racing stables. She has some excellent form in the north around quality fillies like Millwood Nike and Kahlua Flybye.
“She’s been down for a few weeks now and in her first run at Addington went really well zipping up the straight and ran some pretty quick sectionals. She’s got gate speed and from three she’ll get herself handy. She’s our best for the day.”
Racing at the picturesque South Bay racecourse on Monday gets underway at 12-10pm with the Alabar Kaikoura Cup set to go at 4-40pm.
