It’s hard not to notice the recent dominant uprise of the progeny of Sweet Lou across Australasia. A sire who was secured by Woodlands Stud in 2016 not just because of his phenomenal racetrack record, but as the outcross sire our industry was demanding.
Since he arrived, he has continued to be supported by some of the biggest and best breeders in Australasia and the recent racetrack results by his progeny are an attribute to that and them. Hardly a day goes by without at least one of his progeny saluting the judge.
Within the last seven days he has sired 15 winners, which in itself is a great effort but when you consider that from this there were three doubles (Wairio, Wagga Wagga and Albion Park) and even a treble at Pinjarra for his progeny it only further cements the impact he is already having on the industry as an up-and-coming sire.
His treble at Pinjarra on Monday featured three New Zealand bred exports and with a staggering 62% of his New Zealand bred winners having already been exported out of New Zealand to both Australia and North America, it shows his progeny are in huge demand in both hemispheres.
In Australia he was crowned the 2022 leading sire of individual 2-year-old winners for the season with a whooping 50 winners and he currently sits on top as the leading sire of 2-year-olds for 2023 by stakes and individual winners. With 13 individual winners already for the season he is seven clear of his closest rival Art Major and sits above Captaintreacherous on stakes won.
In North America he is serving yet another full book of 140 mares at a service fee of $15,000 USD. His progeny are always featuring in the major races and he continues to feature near the top of the siring leaderboards.
With plenty of talented progeny still to hit the track, Sweet Lou is a sire that must be taken seriously by breeders, owners and trainers across Australaisa. His book in Australia for 2023-24 is already full and closed but contact the team today to join the waitlist or to book in your New Zealand based mare. We are also excited to offer seven weanlings sired by Sweet Lou at the upcoming NZB Standardbred Weanling Sale on May 24th, keep an eye out for the full details in the coming days.
