Southern harness racing trainer Tyler Dewe is known for his good strike rate.
It’s more than a month since his last winner so he must be due for one or two at the Invercargill meeting on Saturday (May 20), when he has six horses entered across the nine race card.
Dewe rates the consistent Gronkowski (Captaintreacherous) as his best bet based on him having garnered three seconds from his last three starts. He gets a handy draw in Race Two.
“He’s always the bridesmaid. He didn’t show a lot of gate speed last week but he gets another good draw. He’ll work forward at some stage, and he should go another big race,” Dewe said.
Four year old gelding Get Kraken (Terror To Love) also starts in this race and has drawn gate two on the second line.
“I thought he went pretty well the other day and probably peaked late. If they go hard and he’s close enough he does have a wee bit of pop. He could be a good chance if that happens.”
In Race Five Beautiful Noise (A Rocknroll Dance) draws wide at gate six. This will be her last start for Dewe as she’s heading off to race in China.
“At her last start she got too keen and it proved to be an awkward drive. We’ve been screaming out for a front row draw for her and we’ve got it. She processes pretty good gate speed, so it’ll be hammer down and we’ll see how she goes. On her day she would beat this field.”
The out of form Northview Peg (Changeover) draws the outside of the front row in Race Six.
“It’s a drop in grade. She’s going to have to make a midrace move. She was trialling well but just hasn’t been going as good as she can.”
The Ascot Park trainer has two starters in Race Nine – The Ladybird (Art Major) and Morries Girl (A Rocknroll Dance).
The Ladybird ran eighth at her last start and the run didn’t disappoint Dewe.
“She made a little bit of ground, and I was pretty happy with that. This field’s probably a bit weaker, she’ll be relying on a bit of luck to feature but if she gets it she might be an outside top three chance.”
Morries Girl draws the outside of the second row and will be driven by Rory McIIwrick.
“She’s been disappointing, we’re going to drive her for one run, and we’ll see what happens.”
Racing at Ascot Park on Saturday gets underway at 12:05pm and will be televised on Trackside Two.
