Canterbury harness racing trainer Cran Dalgety was determined to find a horse that could run in today’s $30,000 Canada Stakes at Ascot Park.
The race is named after the late Canada Broad, the daughter of Southern Harness General Manager Jason Broad. Canada sadly lost her life to cancer in July 2024. Jason and Cran Dalgety have a long standing association.
“We just wanted to find a horse to go in the race to support Jason. We put this filly (Wallflower) in and expected her to go well but there was no way we expected to win the bloody thing especially with Ruby Roe going like a giant,” Dalgety said.
After sitting three back in the outside running line driver Carter Dalgety sent Wallflower forward inside the last 600 bringing the filly four wide, and in a titanic battle up the straight she was too good for a brave Arden’s Memory. She won by a head, with the favourite Ruby Roe a neck back in third.
WALLFLOWER REPLAY
The three year old filly has a multitude of owners including locals Stu and Pauline Gillan of Lochiel.
“With him (Stu) being a southern lad and the majority of this horse’s racing being out of town it was good to get a pretty good staked race with a bit of prestige.”
The win was one of four for Carter. His other wins were Ebury Street, Magician and Republican Party.
The four wins give him a three win lead in the tightly contested Junior Drivers Premiership.
