Oamaru harness racing trainer Matty Williamson understands that Winning Bones (Monkey Bones) is a horse that has to race in a certain rating band to be competitive and yesterday on his home course he found a race that was winnable.

“He’s a horse that if he’s in the right ratings he’s very competitive. If it’s under 55 he’s right there. He’s such a well mannered horse who begins well and gets himself into the right spots to be competitive. When he’s above the 55 rating he just finds it a bit harder to win,” Williamson said.
In the Majestic Man Dullard Cup Winner Handicap Trot Williamson had Winning Bones sitting in the one one as Cody Banner (Bettor’s Delight) dished it up to leader Speeding Spirit (Pegasus Spur). As the field trotted down the home straight Winning Bones was too good beating favourite Majestic Rollon (Majestic Son) by a length and a quarter.
“He got the perfect trip. I thought it might be hard off the 10 metres, but he won well.”
It was the geldings seventh win and fifth for Williamson. He won two races early in his career for Amber Hoffman.
His trotting pedigree goes back to Rosy O’Grady (Sir Dalrae) which won eleven races for Laurie Fleming. She ran second in the 1992 Dominion Handicap beaten a nose by Directorship (Lordship).
Winning Bones was bred by Gerald Cayford who looks after the Everydays A Good Day Syndicate which race the horse.
“They love the ride with him because every eight starts he’s winning or nearly winning. He’s picking up a bit of money, they don’t have to put in a lot and have a lot of fun watching.”
The seven year old has now won seven races and have been place thirteen times from sixty three starts and has banked $72,036.
