Winning roll continues for impressive son of Somebeachsomewhere

Teddy Baker’s (Somebeachsomewhere) winning roll continues.

Moving from being a problem child to being unbeaten in three starts for new harness racing trainer Tyler Dewe, the three year old has come a long way in a short time.

Although today’s (Oct. 13) win over 1609 metres at Wyndham was only by a half a length (the smallest of his three wins) the margin wasn’t a concern to Dewe.

“He’s more of a stayer and he nearly got outsprinted today, but Rory couldn’t pull him up after the finish line. He’s a 2200, 2400 or 2600 metre horse,” he said.

The winning time was 1-54.0.

Dewe has only had the horse for five weeks and his trainer’s licence for about the same time. So it’s been an unbelievable ride for him and his partner Stacey Poole.

“I don’t do much fast work with him because he’s a fit and lean horse. The key to him is to keep him happy.”

Dewe says he’s had a couple of offers for the gelding but none have been settled.

Teddy Baker will now be spelled for ten days with the short term goal the Macca Lodge South of the Waitaki on Show Day at Addington.

Teddy Baker was purchased at the 2020 NZB Bloodstock National Yearling Sales in Christchurch for $5,000 by the Whatever Syndicate which raced Franco Ledger.

He qualified and raced for Ryal Bush trainer Hamish Hunter and had seventeen starts for the stable for three minor placings.

Bred by former Canterbury race caller Mark McNamara and Dancingonmoonlight Limited, he’s from a strong maternal family. His third dam Pacific Flight won forty seven races and over half a million dollars.

Twenty five year old Dewe has been in the harness racing industry since he was sixteen and has worked for Paul Court, Tom Kilkelly, Kirstin Green, Hamish Hunter, Phil Williamson and Brad Williamson.

His first race day drive was for Doug McLachlan, and his first winner as a driver was for Hamish Hunter.

Dewe has taken on two extra horses in the past few weeks. Brendon Fahy has transferred Oamaru winner Rakajed to the Ascot Park trainer, and Dewe has just purchased Sophie, a sixteen start Bettor’s Delight maiden out of Supreme Gem, an eight win Christian Cullen mare.
