BANNOCKBURN, Scotland – The Oakwood Stud Mares Pacing Series saw the third different winner in as many legs on Thursday 6th July at Corbiewood, when STAGBI Future Broodmares winner Loriznitestar bounced back to form.
A maximum field of eight faced the starter in leg three, in which San Diego (John Allan) assumed control of the early fractions. As the race progressed, the leader seemed content bowling along in front and slipped the field by six open lengths, looking to be in control.
However, as the leader swung into the stretch the complexion of the race altered dramatically as three chasing horses gradually closed the gap with San Diego's stride shortening. Lorizenitestar (Grant Cullen), Porcelain Seelster (James Haythornthwaite) and Sureamsomething (William Greenhorn) all came into contention simultaneously, challenging San Diego from all sides.
The four horses thundered to the line in a pulsating finish, in which Loriznitestar showed great tenacity to get up by half a length from Sureamsomething, with Porcelain Seelster half a length behind in third, and San Diego beaten a neck into fourth. A steward's enquiry followed, in which Sureamsomething was disqualified for a pylon violation rendering Porcelain Seelster the runner up, and San Diego placed for the third consecutive week.
In the high grade OPH, Indie Hanover (Richard Haythornthwaite) and Vyrnwy Smoke (Lauren Moran) became embroiled in an early speed duel, with the latter going off stride into the first bend.
This allowed Indie Hanover to assume a comfortable lead, until Ayr Majesty (Hugh Menzies) circumnavigated the field to join the leader and race stride for stride until the three quarter marker. As the challenger faded, Bayrigg Millionayr (Dougie McKenzie) and Robhall (Grant Cullen) emerged from the pack as the most likely dangers, however the leader, despite being all out, managed to hold on. Camden Massino (William Greenhorn) finished strong when finding racing room to deny Robhall third place.
The first race of the night saw a very impressive debutante in the homebred DKs Happy Forever (Richard Thomson) who led from pillar to post and won in effortless fashion.
This two-year-old looks to have a bright future for the Corbiewood-based Moncrieff/Moore barn. Cole Connection (William Greenhorn) was another all-the-way maiden winner on his seasonal debut. Valentine Camden (William Drysdale) came off the pace with a four wide challenge down the stretch to run down the betting favourite Cash (Richard Haythornthwaite) in the closing stages of the Grade 1 & 2 OPH. The Grade 2 to 4 OPH saw back to back wins for Camden Rocco, who came from off the pace to take up the running off the final bend and won going away in an impressive time of 2.04.22.
The next meeting at Corbiewood is Thursday 13th July, featuring the fourth leg of the Oakwood Stud Mares Pacing Series. First race 7.30pm.
