The star from Dublin saw off all comers from Britain and Ireland in the four-stage competition to book his place on today’s flight to Sydney. He has been quarantined in Newmarket for the past three weeks (as Australian rules require), following a constant regime of jogging and walking and gearing up for his long-haul flight today.
Part-owner Mark Flanagan, brother of trainer William Flanagan, said “He’s settled in really well at Newmarket, we’ve been happy with him here. Since the last stage that qualified him for this we’ve eased his work and he’s put on weight, but he should lose that on the flight over to Sydney to put him right again. I can’t believe we’re finally here, now on our way to Australia.”
Once he arrives at Sydney he will be quarantined in the Australian city for another two weeks, the same routine followed by European Melbourne Cup horses less than a month later. He will then travel to Perth in Western Australia, where Gloucester Park will be the centrepiece of two Inter Dominion heats as well as the final on the 13th December. Connections of the Irish star expect for him to have a prep run before he starts out on the first heat in late November.
