It took the photo finish camera to declare 13-1 longshot Barry’s Berries (Downbytheseaside) the harness racing winner by a nose over race favorite Tellmeaboutit in the $25,000 Open Handicap Pace Thursday (Dec. 28) at Dayton Raceway.
The 4th race feature got underway with Brookview Bullet (Josh Sutton) first on the lead and then coming first-over was Tellmeaboutit and driver Sam Widger to take command after the opening quarter mile in :26.1.
As they came to the half mile in :54.2, Tellmeaboutit was still in command as Barry’s Berries and driver Jeremy Smith started first-over from fourth place. Going into the backstretch, Barry’s Berries continued to gain ground on the pacesetter and was in second place by only a head at the three-quarters in 1:21.2 with Let It Ride N (Chris Page) second-over.
Around the final turn and Tellmeaboutit held Barry’s Berries in check by a half a length as they started down the stretch, but despite being parked out first-over since the half mile, was still able to muster enough kick at the wire to win by a nose over Tellmeaboutit in 1:50. This Kit Rocks (Tyler Smith) was third.
BARRY’S BERRIES REPLAY
It was the seventh win on the year for Barry’s Berries. The four-year-old gelding is trained by Steve Carter for Caldwell Mamie Racing of Ohio. He paid $29.00 to win.
