Jonas Scott has been awarded the 2022 Harness Horsemen International annual $4,000 Jerome L. Hauck Scholarship.
Jonas, 18, is a son of the husband-and-wife team of Standardbred harness racing trainers Eli Scott, Jr., and Dorte Scott, of Warwick, MD, and will be pursuing a bachelorās degree in computer science at Bucknell University in Lewisburg, PA this fall. Jonas has excelled both scholastically, athletically, and socially during his tenure at Bohemia Manor High School in Chesapeake City, MD, where he graduated fourth in a class of 163 students with a 3.98 GPA.
āIn the tenth grade I had the opportunity to take a computer science class which opened my eyes to the world of computer programing,ā Jonas offered. āI knew I wanted to pursue a degree in the STEM field based on my performances in science and math. Throughout my life and my studies, I have always had an interest in how technology can help us and a degree in computer science is going to help me do just that.ā
Besides his HHI Scholarship, Jonas has also secured a $3,000 scholarship from the Pennsylvania Harness Horsemenās Association (PHHA). Besides being a straight-A student, Jonas was also vice president of the National Honor Society at Bohemia Manor.
āJonas is a rare student who has the ability to prioritize his schoolwork along with his interscholastic sports and his life outside of school,ā said Emily Bugbee, Bohemia Manorās Spanish teacher. āHis natural curiosity and inquisitiveness have helped him see the world around him with a more critical eye and not to just accept things at the surface level.ā
Besides working as a caretaker for his parentsā racing stable, Jonas played varsity basketball, baseball, and soccerāserving as captain for both his soccer and basketball teams. He was a member of the student council and worked as a busser at a local eatery. He also volunteered as an umpire for the Chesapeake City Little League baseball and softball games.
āMy plan for my career is to work in the field of cybersecurity protecting digital information and systems from malware and hackers,ā Jonas stressed.
