Yonkers Raceway held two $32,000 Open Trots Thursday (Dec. 21) evening, one for the harness racing horses and one for the fillies and mares.
The trotting horses were first on deck in the 4th race where race favorite Nows The Moment (Credit Winner) was able to come first-over in the backstretch and collar Warrior One at the wire in a nose triumph.
Credit Con (Joe Bongiorno) was first on the lead with Warrior One (George Brennan) sitting the two-hole trip with Nows The Moment (Austin Siegelman) racing in third place to the first quarter in :28.
They race that way in the short field past the half mile in :57.3 and into the backstretch when Siegelman moved Nows The Moment first-over by the three-quarters in 1:26.2. By the top of the stretch, Nows The Moment moved into second place, took the lead late in the stretch, holding off Warrior One by a nose in 1:55.2. Pacesetter Credit Con was third by just half a length.
NOWS THE MOMENT REPLAY
It was the 11th win of the season for Nows The Moment, who is having his best season ever. The eight-year-old gelding set his personal record for most wins (11) and most money earned this season at just over $230,000. He is trained by Mr. Allison Mac Donald for owner Sonya Mac Donald of Maine. He paid $3.00 to win.
In the 8th race $32,000 co-feature for filly and mare trotters saw the lone three-year-old filly, Helpoftheseason (Helpisontheway) soundly defeat six mare rivals.
Leaving from the outside post seven, driver Jason Bartlett sent Helpoftheseason right out to the early lead and they never looked back.
With race favorite What Should I Goo (Joe Bongiorno) sitting on their backs, Helpoftheseason cut fractions of :28.2, :58.1 and 1:27.3, holding the field at bay down the stretch to win by one and one-quarter lengths in 1:57.4. What Should I Goo was second with No Turning Back (George Brennan) third.
HELPOFTHESEASON REPLAY
It was the second straight win and eighth of the season for Helpoftheseason. She is trained by Per Engblom for owners John Schmucker, Running Wild Stables and Hickory Hollow Stables, all of Indiana. She paid $4.60 to win.
