Captain Albano (Captaintreacherous) was unstoppable and won the $267,960 Progress Pace at Bally’s Dover on Wednesday night (Nov. 27).
Last week Captain Albano and harness racing driver Todd McCarthy confidently parked most of the field winning the Progress Pace elimination last week.
This week it looked as if the tables would be turned leaving the gate.
Captain Luke left fastest off the wings of the starting gate. Nijinsky landed in the pocket. Captain Albano was hung out passing the opening quarter in an incredible 25.1
It appeared as if Captain Albano would be given the cold shoulder by pacesetter Captain Luke, and become parked the mile.
However, Captain Albano surged and finally cleared for the lead passing in front of the stands. He reached the half in 54 seconds flat, a 28.4 quarter.
Mirage Hanover was in attack mode as he chased Captain Albano up the back stretch. Better Is Nice raced 2nd over on the rim and Gem Quality followed 3rd over parked out.
Captain Albano, the 3/5 betting favorite, maintained a confident, 1 1/2 length lead eying the three quarters in 1:21.4, a 27.4.
In the stretch, Captain Albano intimated the field and breezed to a 2 1/4 length victory. He paced the mile in 1:49.1 and paid $3.40 for the win.
Nijinsky finished 2nd and Captain Luke picked up the show spot.
