BJ’s Squall, dam of World Champion and the fastest harness racing horse, Bulldog Hanover p,4, 1:45.4m $2,419,000, died of age-related issues on Thursday (Jan. 23).
She produced 15 foals in her broodmare career at Hanover Shoe Farms with Bulldog Hanover being her 14th foal, refuting the standard theory of older mares not producing good racehorses.
A daughter of Hall Of Fame Immortal Lady Ashley Ann, and sister to millionaires Betterthancheddar p,4,1:48f $1,634,314 and Courtly Choice p,3,1:47.1m $1,345,754, BJ’s Squall’s progeny earnings total $3,192,084 with seven sub 1:55 performers including Blaise MM Hanover p,1:51f $505,225 and Bernal Hanover p,1:53.2s $101,010 in addition to 2023 O’Brien and Dan Patch Horse of the Year Bulldog Hanover.
BJ’s Squall was a tough mare herself, racing at age two and three and earning $261,750 with seven wins and a record of 1:53.1s. She retired from broodmare duties in 2019 and was placed in the retired herd at Hanover where she spent the remainder of her days at her leisure.
