Harrisburg, PA — Hot Mess Hanover (Cantab Hall), the dam of award-winning trotting mare Jiggy Jog S, sold for $1 million Thursday during the opening session of the Standardbred Horse Sale’s Mixed Sale at the Pennsylvania State Farm Show Complex. The 10-year-old harness racing mare was purchased by Winning Key.
Jiggy Jog S was Hot Mess Hanover’s first foal. Recently retired, Jiggy Jog S won 24 of 41 races and was the 2023 Dan Patch Award winner for best trotting mare. Her $3.1 million in lifetime North American purses ranks fifth in history among female trotters.
In addition to Jiggy Jog S, Hot Mess Hanover’s two subsequent foals, Wild Jiggy S and Margareta Hanover, both are winners on the Grand Circuit.
Hot Mess Hanover, a daughter of Cantab Hall-Her Culese, was sold in foal to Walner, the sire of Jiggy Jog S. She was consigned by Preferred Equine Marketing and owned previously by Vestmarka AB.
The record for a Standardbred sold at public auction was set in February 2019 when trotting mare Atlanta brought $1.55 million online at onGait.com. The previous record was $1.1 million for then 2-year-old trotting filly Cameron Hall at the 2001 Tattersalls December Mixed Sale.
Since Atlanta’s sale, three trotting colts have sold for seven figures: Maverick ($1.1 million) and Damien ($1 million), who both sold at the 2019 Lexington Selected Yearling Sale, and Cambridge Hanover ($1 million), who sold Monday during the yearling portion of the Standardbred Horse Sale.
Next on Thursday’s best-sellers list at the Standardbred Horse Sale were trotting mares On Your Tab and Climb The Pole, who each were purchased for $500,000.
On Your Tab, an 8-year-old daughter of Cantab Hall-Soutaine Hanover, was bought by Cindy Stewart. On Your Tab’s second foal, Buy A Round, was this year’s Hambletonian Oaks runner-up and a 2023 New Jersey Sire Stakes champion. Buy A Round, by Walner, also was a winner on the Grand Circuit and earned $745,782 lifetime before being sold Thursday in Harrisburg for $350,000 to Armitage Farm. On Your Tab was sold in foal to Walner.
Armitage Farm also purchased Climb The Pole, a 4-year-old daughter of Kadabra-Legzy. Climb The Pole, a multiple Grand Circuit winner in Canada with a mark of 1:52.2, was sold in foal to Chapter Seven.
Pacing mare Angelou, the 9-year-old dam of 2023 Dan Patch Award winner and millionaire Captain Albano, was the next highest priced mare to sell, going for $460,000 to Odds On Racing. The daughter of American Ideal-Copywriter was sold in foal to Confederate.
On Your Tab, Buy A Round, Climb The Pole, and Angelou all were consigned by All American Harnessbreds and sold as part of phase one of the All American Harnessbreds dispersal.
Overall Thursday, a total of 344 horses and stallion shares sold for nearly $16 million, an average of $46,442. Last year, the opening day of the mixed sale saw 388 horses and stallion shares sold for $15 million, an average of $38,812.
