BATAVIA, NY — TheDailyNews.com reports that Batavia Downs Gaming & Hotel will have a new director of live racing/racing secretary before the anticipated July 20 start of the 2022 harness season gets underway.
Western Regional Off-Track Betting Corporation (WROTB) and Batavia Downs President and CEO Henry Wojtaszek said Don Hoover has been named to the position to replace Todd Haight, who retired effective March 15. Hoover has been hired to serve from June 1 to Dec. 31 at a salary of $12,000 a month, Wojtaszek said.
“We advertised earlier in the year, put some information out there. The gentleman we hired was recommended to us by other individuals involved with racing in New York state. The indication we have is that they thought he would be the best person to run the program,” Wojtaszek said. “We believe it’s a long-term position. It’s our intention to renew it on a yearly basis.”
Wojtaszek said Haight’s retirement was expected.
“He was going to retire this year, 2022. I was hoping we could convince him to stay through the racing season, but we weren’t able to do that,” he said.
At its meeting Thursday, the WROTB Board of Directors hired consultant Mark Loewe as a live racing consultant for the period of April 1 to Dec. 31 at a salary of $31,500.
“He’s the consultant we will utilize to help us improve our live racing program. He will start April 1 and work with us until the end of this year … and at that point we will re-evaluate,” Wojtaszek said Thursday afternoon. He said the consultant will, “help us navigate our live racing program and the regulatory framework and other issues related to improving the live racing product we have at Batavia Downs.”
