The Post & Courier today reports that wind gusts and temperatures in the 40s forced spectators to bundle up if they wanted to stay warm during the Bruce McGhee Memorial Harness Races on Saturday afternoon in Aiken, South Carolina.
Susie Ferrara’s clothing and accessories included a turtleneck shirt, a sweater, two coats, a scarf and a faux fur hat with a snowflake pin on it.
“No matter how cold it is, it’s time to kick off the horse season in Aiken,” said Ferrara, who watched the Standardbreds competing at McGhees’ Mile from a railbird parking space. “The sun is out, and it’s a pretty day. It’s a good day to come to the races.”
David Eisele, who was sitting on a folding chair in a neighboring railbird spot, also had a positive attitude.
“It’s cold and it’s windy, but it’s not enough to keep me away,” he said. “I was in the U.S. Army. If you think this is bad, go to a war zone and get shot at. See what you think about that.”
There were 12 races in all.
The post time for the first was delayed by 30 minutes to 12:30 p.m. so the track had more time to dry out after early morning rains.
