The first round of Maryland Sire Stakes for the freshman harness racing trotting colts and geldings opened the Thursday Aug. 27 card at Ocean Downs.
Funnyfunnyriddle (Lockkeeper) picked up his second win for the season in the gate to wire mile, holding off a charge by Trent's A Lock (Lockkeeper), stopping the clock a head in front. Les Givens drives and trains for owners Nanticoke Racing, James Magno and Joe Fonte, James Magno is also the breeder. Time for the mile was 2:07.2.
Two splits for freshman pacing fillies went to post as races 3 and 5.
Reinsman Russell Foster sent Wowie Zowie to the engine, opening up at every marker, to lead the field by 6 ¼ lengths as the clock read 2:00.1. Emma's Enigma (Rusty's For Real) picked up second with a pocket trip. Russell Foster also owns Wowie Zowie, Megan Fosters Trains and Michael Hans is the breeder.
Owners Nanticoke Racing, James Magno and Joe Fonte and trainer Les Givens picked up their second stakes win for the night when Sjs Special Kay (Russell Hanover), with Jim Morand between the wheels, stopped the timer in 1:58. Kelsey's For Real (Rusty's For Real) took the place spot. Magno and Fonte are the breeders.
