A second Hall of Fame horseman has endorsed restoration of freeze brands as a mandatory part of registration of all US Standardbreds.
Following Dave Palone’s endorsement of brands last month, David Miller, with nearly 14,000 wins and over $240 million in purses, has teamed up with his daughter Devan to give a video endorsement of brands, along with microchips, to give horses two forms of ID.
Standing with Devan’s pacer, Creighton Hanover (p. 5, 1:51.4, $411,185), on a windy Florida shedrow, Miller, who drives the horse for his daughter, says, “I’m David Miller and this is my daughter Devan. I’m a third-generation horseman and we love what we do.”
“This is Creighton Hanover – you can tell by his brand. We understand the reasoning for the chip, but we think it’s important to keep the brand, too,” says Devan. “We support the brand, it really is their trademark, we’re proud of our Standardbreds. “
“We stand for the brand,” says David, to close.
Mandatory brands, along with chip implantation as part of the registration process, will be voted on at the national USTA meeting in Columbus, Ohio, next month.
