Feeling Sweet (Sweet Lou) scored a mild upset harness racing victory in the $25,000 Mares Open Pace at Bally’s Dover on Wednesday night (March 15).
Three mares battled for the early lead as sparks were flying approaching the quarter pole. Shield Maiden protected the rail. The 2/5 betting favorite, Don’t Fence Me In, was parked out in the two path and Feeling Sweet (Mike Cole) was parked three wide passing the quarter in :27 flat.
As the dust settled, Dont Fence Me In took the lead away from a stubborn Shield Maiden. Feeling Sweet then cleared and led the field to the half in :54.4 (:27.4)
Dewitt For Josie (Jason Thompson) immediately applied first over pressure to Feeling Sweet, before the half. Divine Deo followed second over on the rim. Feeling Sweet accepted the challenge and passed the three quarters in 1:23 (:28.1).
Feeling Sweet maintained a length and three quarter lead in the stretch. Dont Fence Me In surrendered along the pylons and Dewitt For Josie tired late.
Feeling Sweet won by four and a quarter lengths and paced the mile in 1:52. She paid $12.00 to win. Feeling Sweet is owned by George and Tina Dennis Racing of Wyoming, Delaware and is trained by Joe Columbo.
