Fighting it out against a stubborn Red Right Hand, Greg The Leg (Huntsville) and harness racing driver Brent Holland had to dig in to maintain the lead the entire last quarter mile in capturing the Open Pace at Yonkers Raceway Wednesday (Dec. 6).
The 2nd race $32,000 Open for 3-5-year-olds got underway with 6-1 Greg The Leg scooting to the early lead from post three. Sitting the pocket trip was Southwind Petyr (Joe Bongiorno) as they went by the opening quarter mile in :27.3.
Then popping first-over from third place was Red Right Hand and driver Jason Bartlett and they started gaining ground on pacesetter Greg The Leg past the half mile marker in :57.1. Sporty M Three (Yannick Gingras) picked up the second-over live cover.
As they raced down the backstretch, Red Right Hand had collared Greg The Leg by the three-quarters in 1:24.3, but Red Right Hand could not clear to control the pace as those two raced noses apart around the final turn.
Then coming down the stretch and to the finish wire, Greg The Leg dug in just enough to come back and win by three-quarters of a length in 1:53.2. Southwind Petyr was third. The race favorite was Pleaseletmeknow (Matt Kakaley) who got away in fifth place and never made a move in the race.
GREG THE LEG REPLAY
It was the 13th win this year for Greg The Leg. The four-year-old gelding is trained by Michael Forte for owner Lester Gelardi, Jr. and paid $14.60 to win.
