Bloodhorse.com reports today that a stream of sentencing hearings in horse doping cases resumed on Nov. 17 in New York City when Thomas Guido III learned he will start serving 20 months in prison early next year.
Guido, a former harness racing trainer, is among a group of six persons named in the same indictment almost three years ago for unlawful use of performance-enhancing drugs. He entered a guilty plea May 25 to a single count of drug adulteration and misbranding, a felony. Guido admitted that between at least 2015 to January 2020 he misled and deceived state and federal regulators with respect to the distribution, purchase, and receipt of PEDs in his harness racing operation.
Two days ago, former trainer Rene Allard and veterinarian Dr. Louis Grasso were sentenced in the same courtroom. All three men appeared before Judge P. Kevin Castel in U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York.
Castel recommended Guido serve his sentence at Otisville Camp in New York to facilitate family visitation. Guido was ordered to surrender for incarceration on Feb. 14, 2023. Upon release, he will be under supervision by the probation office for one year.
Monetary terms were also part of the package. Guido was fined $10,000, and a $61,800.97 forfeiture order agreed on when he pleaded guilty was paid in full on the day of sentencing.
