Hellabalou (Sweet Lou) and harness racing driver Yannick Gingras were able to bottom out the field in the $32,000 Open Handicap Pace Monday (Nov. 14) at Yonkers Raceway.
The 4th race feature saw Moonshine Kisses (George Brennan) leave out of the gate as did race favorite Hellabalou. Hellabalou and Gingras worked their way to the lead at the quarter in :27.2.
Hellabalou led the single file field past the half mile marker in :56.3. Then entering the backstretch, American Mercury (Tyler Buter) came first-over with Burnham Boy N (Jim Pantaleano) second-over to the three-quarters in 1:24.3.
Around the final turn Hellabalou held the field at bay and was strong through the stretch, winning by three lengths in 1:52.1. Coming in second after sweeping four-wide from eighth place on the final turn was Covered Bridge Jordan Stratton) with American Mercury third.
HELLABALOU REPLAY
For Hellabalou, a five-year-old stallion, it was his fourth win in his last five starts and his ninth triumph of the season. He is trained by Ron Burke and owned by Burke Racing Stable, Eric Good, Weaver Bruscemi and Larry Karr. He paid $2.50 to win.
