Karl (Tactical Landing) trotted his way into the record books with a dominating 1:51.4 stakes and track record score in the $700,000 Breeders Crown for two-year-old colt and gelding trotters in Grand Circuit harness racing action at Harrahās Hoosier Park on Friday night (October 27).
Karl won for the seventh time in eight starts and the colt responsible for the lone blemish on his record, T C I (Dave Miller) was no match in this Breeders Crown event, finishing a distant second ahead of Security Protected (Tim Tetrick) and Private Access (Louis Roy).
T C I was intent on heading to the front from post five and he cleared to the lead prior to reaching the opening quarter in :26.4 while Gingras was happy to follow along in fourth with Karl. As T C I started to slow the pace heading to the half, Gingras launched Karl to the outside and sent him to front before the :56.1 half.
There were no serious challengers as the field moved past the three quarters in 1:25.0 and it looked like the expected battle between Karl and T C I was about to materialize. But after getting a middle half breather of 58.1 Karl was full of trot and he quickly opened up a couple of lengths at the eighth pole.
With a 26.4 kicker, Karl set the new track and stakes record with T C I finishing 2 1/2 lengths behind. It was another three lengths back to Security Protected with Private Access holding fourth.
