Lit De Rose (Leader Bayama) and harness racing driver Pat Lachance were able to close from seventh place at the top of the stretch to win the $36,000 Mares Open-Handicap Pace Friday (May 5) at Yonkers Raceway in an upset.
The 8th race feature got underway with Man Dontforget Man (Jim Marohn, Jr) cutting the mile with Pure Silky (Jordan Stratton) sitting in the pocket-seat and race favorite Lucky Artist A (Braxten Boyd) parked out first-over in second place as they passed the first quarter in :27.
As they reached the half mile in :56.2, Man Dontforget Me was still on the lead with Lucky Artist A still dogging the leader on the outside with Drama Act (George Brennan) second-over and Lit De Rose still in eighth place.
Around the third turn and Lucky Artist A had enough and began to fade as Drama Act swept three-wide into first-over position in the backstretch. Violets Rainbow (Matt Kakaley) was then second-over and then three-wide as they passed the three-quarters in 1:24.3.
Meanwhile, Lit De Rose was still sitting eighth, moving to the outside and beginning to close on the field half way around the final turn.
By the top of the stretch, Violets Rainbow and Kakaley clear by everyone and then bursting on the scene from seventh place on the outside was Lit De Rose, who collared Violets Rainbow at the wire to win by a head in 1:53.4. Pure Silky was third.
LIT DE ROSE REPLAY
It was the third win on the year for Lit De Rose. The eight-year-old mare is trained by Lachance for owner-breeder Guy Cobeil of Quebec. She paid $17.20 to win.
