Mommamia Volo (Tactical Landing) notched her third straight major harness racing stakes victory capturing the $320,000 58th Kentucky Filly Futurity for three-year-old trotting fillies at the Red Mile Sunday (Oct. 8).
And the filly did it with authority for driver Todd McCarthy, charging down the stretch to win by two lengths in 1:51.3 over Walner Payton with Blonde Bombshell third.
The 10th race co-feature saw Blonde Bombshell (David Miller) leave from post five and take the early lead only to give way to Walner Payton (Dexter Dunn). Then by the first quarter in :28,1, it was Special Way (Tim Tetrick) charging up first-over and taking command heading to the half mile marker.
As Special Way led the way to the half in :56.3, Secret Volo (Mattias Melander) started up first over entering the backside, giving second-over cover to race favorite Mommamia Volo and Todd McCarthy.
At the three-quarters in 1:24.3, McCarthy fanned Mommamia Volo three-wide and once they had clearance, Mommamia Volo went to work down the stretch, mowing down her four competitors.
āI was kind of worried there early [if] there was going to be an outside flow there the whole way,ā Todd McCarthy said. āWe were able to get a helmet and a target for a lot longer than I thought we were going to be able to, and then we got a little bit of live cover late. I couldnāt have written the trip any better. Carterās just had this filly so spot on and I had so much faith in her speed there down the lane.ā
