Harness racing driver Matt Kakaley started out red hot on Saturday night’s (June 24) ten-race program at MGM Yonkers Raceway and stayed that way the entirety of the proceedings, winning nine times and finishing second in the one event he wasn’t victorious in. With that effort, he joined Luc Ouellette, Walter Case and Stephane Bouchard in the record book at Yonkers for most wins by a driver on a single card.
Kakaley swept the first four races with Deep Infatuation N [1:53.3], Imma Be [1:54], HP Xanadu [1:54.3] and Abruzzo [1:54.1] but then had to settle for the second-place spot behind Diamondbeach, driven by George Brennan to a 1:52.2 victory, in the fifth dash.
It was just a short break from the winner’s circle, though, as Kakaley closed out the night by prevailing with Feelin Red Hot [1:53.3], Toccoa Falls [1:56], Miss Chantilly N [1:54.1], Stellar Yankee [1:51.4] and Magical Journey [1:56.4].
In total Kakaley had a 12-victory day, as before he came to MGM Yonkers Raceway, he netted a hat trick at Pocono.
An in-demand driver wherever he brings his colors, Kakaley currently sits second in the standings at MGM Yonkers Raceway behind only Jason Bartlett.
Coming up next Friday [June 30] at MGM Yonkers Raceway are four finals for 3-year-olds: the $300,000 MGM Yonkers Trot, the $250,000 (est.) MGM Grand Messenger Stakes, the $115,000 (est.) New York New York Mile and the $100,000 (est.) Park MGM Pace. The MGM Yonkers Trot and MGM Grand Messenger Stakes are the first legs of the Trotting and Pacing Triple Crowns.
MGM Yonkers Raceway is currently operating on a Monday-Tuesday-Thursday-Friday-Saturday live racing schedule with post time at 7 p.m. (EDT).
