CIRCLEVILLE, OH. – The Ohio Selected Jug Yearling Sale is this Friday (September 13) at the Pickaway Ag Center, Circleville, Ohio, which means that the focus of many of the Buckeye state’s Standardbred owners and trainers has turned to a search for the next champion harness racing horse.
There are 277 yearlings cataloged, and the auction will get underway at 10 am on September 13 with a special Show Day on Thursday (Sept. 12). As always, the sales company and breeders will provide complimentary food and refreshments from 4 pm to 6 pm on Thursday, while prospective purchasers peruse the expansive offerings.
While the Ohio Super Night is still a month away, six of the eight divisions of the Ohio Sire Stakes are led by Ohio Selected Jug Sale alumnus. It’s easy to see why the astute horse people in Ohio make this sale their primary marketplace for future achievement.
TENNESSEE TOM (Long Tom) 3,1:53f-’24 ($456,350), is a mountainous success story, having won his $300,000 freshmen final last season for trainer Ron Burke. This year at 3, he is well on his way to sophomore honors as he has captured four Ohio Sire Stakes events. The leading conditioner selected the son of Long Tom from this sale two years ago, paying just $26,000 for the half-million dollar earner. Dublin Valley Farm, Agent, will offer Hip # 55, who is an Uncle Peter half-sister to this Ohio 2-year-old Trotting Colt of the Year in 2023.
CLEVER CODY (The Panderosa) p,3,1:50.1f-’24 ($546,332) also calls the Ohio Selected Jug sale his alma mater, having been purchased by Dr. Ian Moore, et al, for $24,000. He is currently the leading point earner in the glamour boys division, and was consigned and sold by Marvin Raber Farm.
And success does not stop with the sophomores, as this year’s freshmen crop is chock full of Ohio Selected Jug Sale graduates.
Spring Haven Farm consigned and sold the leading OHSS point earning 2-year-old pacing colt RICK WINK 2,1:51.4h-’24 ($171,700) who is undefeated in six starts this season.
Another streaking star is SWINGTOWN p,2,1:50.4f-’24 ($207,850) who won the Next Generation and four legs of the Ohio Sire Stakes. Steiner Stock Farm will offer Hip # 96, a Downbytheseaside full sister to Swingtown, who is also a three-quarter or half-sister to Captain Barbossa p,4,1:47.1 ($644,389) and Whichwaytothebeach p,1:48.4-’24 ($816,624).
On the freshmen trotting side of the ledger LT LOVERBOY 2,1:56.1f-’24 ($105,230) is the leading point earner for the boys. He was bred, raised and sold by Midland Acres, who will offer Hip # 222, his Ready For Moni half-brother.
Trotting distaffs are also well-represented in the 2-year-old division, with both top point earners claiming this sale as their rite of passage.
MOCHA HILL 2,1:55.1f-’24 ($148,917) was consigned and sold by Winterwood Farm, Agent; and ROSE RUN ALLISON 2,1:55.1f-’24 ($140,667) who hails from the Rose Run Farm nursery, and will sell Hip # 105, her Triumphant Caviar half-sister.
