Toccoa Falls (Trixton) and harness racing driver Brett Beckwith were able to grind it out first over nearly the entire mile and still were able to win the $12,000 Preferred Handicap Trot Friday (Jan. 6) at Freehold Raceway.
The 9th race feature saw Champagne On Ice (Pat Lachance) boldly go three-wide against Camphellini (Bryson Dunning) to get the lead after a :29 first quarter. The track was sloppy with a two second allowance from the judges.
With Champagne On Ice in command and Camphellini sitting the two-hole trip to the half mile in :59.3, Toccoa Fall and Beckwith had started up first over from sixth place. Charging on the outside down the backstretch, they collared Champagne On Ice at the three-quarters in 1:29.2.
Also, parked out and moving into contention was Willy Walton (Jim Marohn, Jr), who was first-over after the three-quarters and collared Toccoa Falls on the final turn and heading down the stretch.
But Toccoa Falls still had something in the tank down and pulled away in the stretch to win by two lengths in 1:58.4. Willy Walton was second with Warrior One (Austin Siegelman) third.
TOCCOA FALLS REPLAY
