Penney’s Spirit earned his first harness racing victory as a 12-year-old in his 22nd try of the season at Monticello Raceway on Thursday.
The Blog Of Life gelding, driven by trainer McKenzie Sowers, settled into the pocket early and enjoyed a golden trip through :28.4, :59.3, and 1:29.3 fractions. Sowers swung her gelding out on the far turn, and they dispatched leader Giddyallyougot (Jim Devaux) in late stretch to claim the victory in 2:00. Giddyallyougot was well clear in second. R T Lange (John De Simone Jr.) finished third. The win price was $11.60.

Sowers took over the training of the gelding on Aug. 17. He finished fifth and third in his first and second starts under he guidance, respectively. The horse is 53-for-312 lifetime and has earned just less than $180,000.
Jim Taggart Jr. bagged a triple as the day’s winningest driver.
Monticello Raceway is set to return to action on Monday, Sep. 6 at 12:10 p.m. EDT.
