Harness racing trainer-driver Kayne Kauffman gave 10-1 longshot Rose Run Valor (Uncle Peter) a perfect two-hole trip as they posted a narrow victory in the $30,000 Open-Handicap Trot Wednesday (April 12) at Miami Valley Raceway.
The 10th race feature first saw Smoking Jet (Chris Page) go right for the lead with Kauffman settling Rose Run Valor in second as they raced to the opening quarter mile in :27.3.
Going to the half mile race favorite The Mighty Hill (Trevor Smith) started up first-over with Combs Hanover (Tyler Smith) second-over. The half went in :56.4.
The Mighty Hill continued to gain on race leader Smoking Jet and all the while Rose Run Valor was sitting third on the rail as the two leaders battled to the three-quarters in 1:24.2.
Coming off the final turn, it was Smoking Jet and The Mighty Hill going and head and head and just as The Might Hill began to tire, Kauffman found new life with Rose Run Valor, who slipped in along the rail and beat Smoking Jet to the wire by a head in 1:53.1. The Mighty Hill was third by three-quarters of a length.
ROSE RUN VALOR REPLAY
It was the fifth win this year for Rose Run Valor. The six-year-old gelding is owned by Natalie Kauffman and paid $22.40 to win.
