It took the photo finish camera to declare the winner of the $12,500 Preferred-Handicap Trot at Freehold Raceway on Friday afternoon, February 3, 2023. It was a cold, breezy day for harness racing with a fast track but a two second allowance.
The 9th race feature saw Miss Mckee and driver Brett Beckwith work their way to the top and take early command of the race with Brownie (Daniel Dube) sitting the two-hole trip to the first quarter in :28.3.
There was little movement as Miss McKee led the field to the half mile marker in :58.2. Campbellini (Austin Siegelman) came first-over giving outside cover to race favorite Newsboy (Winning Fireworks) and driver Jim Marohn, Jr. Then on the third turn, Campbellini broke stride
At three quarters in 1:28, Newsboy was second behind Miss McKee, who had a two length lead as they started down the stretch, but a determined Newsboy and a strong drive by Marohn, got the job done as they won by a nose in 1:57.4 over Miss McKee. Dot Dot Dot Dash (Vinnie Ginsgurg) was third.
NEWSBOY REPLAY
It was the first win in four starts this year for Newsboy. The five-year-old gelding is trained by Per Engblom for the Morrison Racing Stable. He paid $3.00 to win.
