Yonkers Raceway’s Pick 5 on Monday night (September 13) started with a $7,549.19 carryover, and $42,023 worth of new money poured into the pool. However, a run of upsets during the sequence left only Rockapelo covered in the final leg, and when he was defeated, there were no winning tickets held.
As a result, on Tuesday night (September 14), there will be a carryover of $41,168.32 carryover and a $125,000 guaranteed pool in the wager.
The guarantee in the Pick 5 is being offered as part of the United States Trotting Association’s Strategic Wagering Program. Free past performances for the Pick 5, courtesy of TrackMaster, will be available here. The Pick 5, which begins in race five, has a takeout rate of 20 percent.
One of the surprises during the Pick 5 came in the featured $48,000 Open Handicap Pace. Funatthebeach N (Jordan Stratton), making his debut for trainer Jeff Gillis and owner Mark Ford after being claimed for $75,000 last Monday (September 6), raced in fourth through fractions of 27.2, 56.4, and 1:24.2 set by Western Fame (Dan Dube), then swung out three-wide off the cover of Bronx Seelster (George Brennan) turning for home.
Funatthebeach N, a 7-year-old Somebeachsomewhere gelding, surged by the leaders in mid-stretch and then drew clear to win by two lengths in 1:52. Bronx Seelster wrestled second away from Western Fame, and American Courage (Matt Kakaley), the lone 3-year-old in the field, was fourth after following Funatthebeach N.
This was Funatthebeach N’s 21st career victory, and he has now earned $241,939. Sent off at 7-1, he paid $16.00 and was atop a $57.50 exacta and a $320.50 trifecta.
