Despite having to start from the far outside in post 8 and having to go against race favorite Catch The Fire, Gold Digger King (Pet Rock) was up to the task in winning the $30,000 Open-Handicap Pace at Scioto Downs Saturday afternoon (May 28).
The seventh race harness racing feature saw GD Western Joe (Chris Page) the first on the early lead but coming on strong was Gold Digger King and driver Tyler Smith and they took over command at the opening quarter mile in :27.
They raced nearly single file through the half mile in :55.1 with Gold Digger King in full command while Catch The Fire (Trevor Smith) was content to sit third on the rail as YS Mathis (Dan Noble) started up first-over in fourth place past the three-quarters in 1:22.3.
By the top of the stretch Gold Digger King was up by one and one-half lengths with GD Western Joe still sitting the pocket and Catch The Fire in fourth place.
Then with a burst of speed in the stretch, Catch The Fire closed like a rocket but it was too little too late to catch Gold Digger King, who won by three-quarters of a length over Catch The Fire in 1:50.2 GD Western Joe was third.
GOLD DIGGER KING REPLAY
It was the second straight win in the Open at Scioto Downs for Gold Digger King and his third win in five starts this year for the six-year-old gelding who is trained by Scott Mogan for owner Linda Van Camp. He paid $6.60 to win.
