CHARLOTTETOWN, PE – Nobody bothered to tell Drivingthedragon N she was the longest shot on the board as she wired the featured pace Thursday evening at Red Shores Racetrack and Casino at the Charlottetown Driving Park.
Jason Hughes was in the race bike for the winning trip as she left from the outer post in the compact field of five that was contesting the $1,800 feature at the capital oval. Drivingthedragon N made front en route to laying down fractions of 29, 59.1, and 1:28.2 before kicking clear for a one length advantage in 1:57.3 over West River Ambyr (Driven by Steven Shepherd) and race favourite Woodmere Finesse (Gilles Barrieau).
The winning mare paid $23.40 on the nose for owner Donald MacRae of Vernon Bridge, P.E.I.
Cougar Gal scored her fourth win in-a-row for the combination of trainer Neil Bambrick and driver Barrieau, who had three winners on the weekday card. The now 32-time winning mare stopped the clock in 1:59.1. Barrieau's other wins came aboard Sports Highlights in 2:00.1 for trainer Todd Walsh of Charlottetown, P.E.I., and Finnish Your Way in 2:01.4 from his own stable.
The program also featured a pair of overnight classes for O'Brien and Lady Slipper eligible three-year-old pacers with less than $3,000 in earnings, carrying a $2,500 purse in each. The O'Brien eligible class of pacing colts saw Ocean Prince deliver off the front end for driver David Dowling in 2:03.1. The pacing colt is trained by Elton Millar for owners Rebecca Blaisdell of Ellerslie and Garth Jenkins of Charlottetown, P.E.I.
Bayside Alexis romped in the Lady Slipper eligible class by 16-lengths in 1:59.2 for driver Ken Murphy and owner-trainer Scott Dunn of Montague, P.E.I.
