FREEHOLD, N.J.— Harness racing amateur driver Yogi Sheridan sat a pocket trip and capitalized on the circumstances to win behind Lionhead (Uncle Peter) in the $9,000 American Harness Drivers Club (AHDC) Trot at Freehold Raceway on Saturday (March 2).
Leaving from post 5, Sheridan lunged for the lead with Lionhead and cleared pylon-starter Train (driven by Paul Minore) to a :30 first quarter. Grafenberg (Joe Faraldo) – sitting in third – soon came off the pegs and swung towards the lead moving for the half, timed in 1:01.3. Grafenberg led the field up the backside with Lionhead on his helmet and the rest of the field chasing in behind.
Past three-quarters in 1:30.4, Grafenberg remained strong on the lead until jumping stride through the final turn, leaving Lionhead to inherit the lead spinning for home. And once in front, Lionhead sprung forward to a 2-1/4-length win in 2:01.1 over second-place finisher Grafenberg, who was placed seventh for a lapped-on break. Hammer Creek (John Calabrese) moved to the runner-up spot with Warrawee Preferred (Joe Lee) taking third and Winneress (Anthony Verruso) fourth.
Terry Morgan owns and trains Lionhead, an 8-year-old gelding that paid $4.00 to win.
