There was no way that anyone was going to pass Rose Run Zane (Racing Hill) as harness racing driver Austin Hanners sent the three-year-old gelding to the front and despite constant pressure to retain the lead, was able to wire the field and win the $35,000 final of the George Williams Memorial Thursday at Miami Valley Raceway.
The 10th race feature for three-year-olds saw race favorite Rose Run Zane battle with Mufferaw Joe (Tyler Smith), who left from post eight, took early command, but Rose Run Zane and Hanners came right back to take the lead after an opening quarter mile in :26.4.
The action only continued as Be Dazzled Lou A (Luke Hanners) moved first-over from third place to take on Rose Run Zane pushing the half mile in :55.4. Those two would battle it out down the backstretch with Rose Run Zane holding off Be Dazzled Lou A at the three-quarters in 1:23.1.
By the top of the stretch, Rose Run Zane and Be Dazzled Lou A were still just a quarter length apart from each other, but Rose Run Zane would not be denied, pulling away at the finish to win by one and one-quarter lengths over Be Dazzled Lou A in 1:52. Mufferaw Joe was third.
ROSE RUN ZANE REPLAY
It was the second straight win in four starts for Rose Run Zane. He is trained by Dan Venier for owners John Saunders and Leann Saunders, paying $2.80 to win.
Then in the 11th race $34,000 Open Handicap Pace, it was the pocket-sitting Makin Some Noise (Always B Miki) who sat a perfect two-hold trip for driver Kurt Sugg and beat race favorite Carbine (Trace Tetrick) to the wire.
Art Scaping (Jeremy Smith) was first on the lead with Makin Some Noise in the pocket as they passed the first quarter in :27.2.
Then it was Carbine coming first-over and going after Art Scaping past the half mile marker in :56.1. Carbine did not let the pressure off and had the lead on the outside by a nose over Art Scaping at the three-quarters in 1:23, a :26.4 quarter. Shane Falco (Brett Miller) was now in the hunt second-over.
At the top of the stretch, the two leaders were still noses apart but sitting the two-hole and ready to strike was Makin Some Noise. Coming down the stretch, Sugg moved Makin Some Noise three-wide off the pylons to the center of the track and gunned down Carbine and Art Scaping to win by a neck in 1:51.4. Carbine was second with Art Scaping third.
MAKIN SOME NOISE REPLAY
It was the fifth win on the year for Makin Some Noise. The six-year-old gelding is trained by Ed Miller for owner Rebecca Sugg. He paid $14.40 to win.
