Monticello, NY— Sauvignon Bluechip (Art Major, Adam Moeykens) won the $6,500 harness racing Open pace at Monticello Raceway on Tuesday afternoon (Dec. 19).
Some Deal Hanover (Bruce Aldrich Jr) took the early lead, followed by Purple Poet (Gregory Merton) in second and Cr Dudley (Rick Harp) in third. From the outside, Kj Hunter (Jim Taggart Jr) rushed to take the lead as they passed the first quarter mile in :28.3.
As they came by the stands for the first time, Kj Hunter led the way by a length, followed by Some Deal Hanover in the pocket in second. They passed the half mile in :58.
As they approached the three-quarter mile in 1:26.4, Kj Hunter was holding on to the lead, with Purple Poet following closely in second. Sauvignon Bluechip and Some Deal Hanover were in a battle for third. From the far outside, Sauvignon Bluechip started to move to the front.
Sauvignon Bluechip crossed the wire first in 1:57, one quarter length in front of Black Edition N (Michael Merton). Air Guitar (Joseph Chindano Jr) finished in third.

Sauvignon Bluechip is a 5-year-old gelding trained by David Dziengiel for owners Robert Sholes, Edward Davis, and David Dziengiel. He paid $19.20 to win.
Adam Moeykens had a driving double. Mcgwire Sowers had a driving and training double.
