Shawn Thayer has “Biggie” day at Bangor

Bangor, Maine – A rare weekday harness racing matinee was contested at Bangor Raceway on Monday (May 23) as Sunday’s regular session was carried over after being KO’d by a wind aided electrical failure at historic Bass Park. Despite the short notice, the reasonable throng of fans who attended were treated to an electrifying performance by the horses and drivers who gamely regrouped to put on a power packed show.

Driver Shawn Thayer was among the turbo-charged teamsters, guiding two winning entries down Victory Lane, both from the Michael Huff training roster. Biggie, a nine-year-old son of Somebeachsomewhere led the stable assault, stopping the clock in a seasonal best 1:55.2, the second fastest mile of the day at Bangor.

The Thayer/Huff connection quickly struck again just two races later as River Run Deep (1:57.4) flowed freely on the front end to nab his second seasonal score at 4-1 odds while keying a robust $1252.80 trifecta return.

In other Bangor news, driver Dan Deslandes continued his torrid ways on Monday. The meet’s leading pilot sent two more winners out from his own powerful stable as Post Time Terror (1:57.3) and War Daddy (1:56.2) both took seasonal marks.

Heath Campbell, a perennial powerhouse at Bangor, also scorched the oval on Monday, teaming I Saw Red (1:59.3) to her second consecutive score and Rose Run Slider (1:57) to his third win of the season.

On the equine side of the ledger, Captain Nash (Captaintreacherous) eluded early detection on the lead (just ask the announcer) while rumbling to his fourth consecutive top-class cake walk in the weekly $6800 Winners Over feature event. Owned by Reginald Duguay, the six-year-old stallion stopped the clock in a blistering 1:54.4 with Gary Mosher controlling the reins for trainer Richard Bartlett.

Bangor Raceway proudly features live harness racing every Wednesday at 3:00 p.m. (EDT) with the popular Sunday matinees getting underway at 12:15 p.m. Simulcast wagering is available Wednesday through Sunday from noon until 7:00 p.m.
