The $142,600 Perfect Sting Mares Pace saw Silver Label (Bettor’s Delight) post a 14-1 upset, and establish a new lifetime mark of 1:49, against ten rivals in the 15th edition of the harness racing stake.
Trained by Nick Gallucci, Silver Label notched her 17th career win and fifth victory of the season for owner Millar Farms of Stouffille, Ontario. The win pushed her lifetime earnings to $847,415.
“I didn’t expect anyone to beat Grace Hill, but I’m glad it was my horse,” said Gallucci. “She seems to be getting better and better with each start. We’ve staked her to everything that’s available for the mares this season. We’re going to look for more races here at The Meadowlands.”
Scott Zeron was in the sulky as the 4-year-old mare used a tough, first-over journey to secure first prize away from the leading Grace Hill. Driven by Doug McNair, Grace Hill held on to be second at 2-5, while a hard-trying Test Of Faith (David Miller), got up in late stretch to be third.
“I had the 11-hole so that meant I could follow anyone behind the gate and so I followed Grace Hill, it was a soft middle portion in the race, but she was just amazing,” said Zeron, who had driven her for the first time. “He told me she was in top form, and I couldn’t be more impressed with her.”
