Northfield, OH — Speedy Dominic A (American Ideal) had been knocking on the door against Open harness racing company over the past couple of weeks, and on Sunday (Jul 16), he upset rivals closing from off the pace to win the $20,000 featured event for pacers at MGM Northfield Park.
The Longest Yard (Brett Miller), Camouflage Money (Chris Lems), and Bettor Than Spring (Billy Davis Jr.) all left alertly off the wings into the first turn. While Camouflage Money cleared rivals, the lead was short-lived as Bettor Than Spring took control before a quarter of :26.2.
Davis was able to work out a :29 breather in the second quarter as he began to feel pressure from The Longest Yard, who started a first over bid. The pair would match strides into the backstretch with Markham Eyre N (Luke Ebersole) second over, looking the leaders over from fourth.
At three-quarters in 1:22.3, Miller stepped on the gas with The Longest Yard and opened up a two-length lead. Through the stretch, Miller implored The Longest Yard to dig in, but he waivered late as Speedy Dominic A made a three-wide bid for the lead, working his way past foes to win by a half-length in 1:51.1. Markham Eyre N finished second while Sawyer’s Desire (Hunter Myers) rallied to be third.
