There are several rich earners, Talktomecourage N who earned $611,000, Falcatraz $379,000, Wicked Style $330,000, Chevals Clivesdale $330,000. Together these horses earned nearly $2,000,000. Fortunately, for Cheval, his past owners in Australia, and another American owner, learned of his plight and stepped right up, but this grand horse needs a home, just as the 42 others do. Falcatraz is in the opposite situation. All but one owner was reached, none are helping, however, kind people donated. He, too, needs a home.
The vast majority are in the kill pen in Shippensburg, PA. These trotters and pacers are being weighed today to start their process. One mare is in foal, she needs a home with the experience to bring her baby into the world. Every one of these horses needs a home and donations to remove their name from the shipping manifest. The pen has not released the prices for each of the horses just yet, but it is expected that the average will be $850 each. There are a couple of horses with partial donations. (This information changes quickly and is difficult to compile among the staff and volunteers. Updates can be provided by contacting SRF.)
What these horses need:
homes; foster homes; tax-deductible donations; help to reach out to past owners and breeders to take in their horse and help financially; help from other organizations with missions that align with SRF so these horses will not be at risk again; sponsors; your purchase of a horse directly from the kill pen-contact SRF for the information.
SRF is still unable to take in more horses, no quarantine farms are available, and no funds for their care. It is facilitating home offers, fosters, and whatever it takes to get them safe.
No help can be expected from the United States Trotting Association, (USTA) or their Standardbred Transition Alliance as they have noted that they will not support organizations helping Standardbreds tagged for slaughter. These horses once again are depending on kind people to help them.
In November and December of 2020, SRF helped more than 100 in the same situation. They all had homes committed and sponsors, yet 18 are now under SRF’s care and expense. Their home offers fell through, and sponsorships have ended. This situation along with the challenging financial times, due to Covid, continues to plague the 32 year old non-profit.
Many of these horses are very hungry, emaciated, stoic. Some have old racing injuries, and others are suffering from overuse on the roads, plowing, and logging in the rural areas. With some food and good care, and a chance to rehabilitate, these horses, likely already under saddle, make wonderful riding horses, and companions. Information on their complete condition and experience is not information SRF is provided by the pens.
