Cream Ridge, NJ – 12/24/2020 – Dave Fletcher received that surprising phone call from the Standardbred Retirement Foundation, (SRF) bringing him the good news. "Mr. Fletcher, you are the winner of the $5,000 prize,' shared Judy Bokman, SRF's Director. "You have to be kidding, I'm astonished! I never won anything like this in my life!" he responded.
Mr. Fletcher has been a good friend to SRF's horses over the years. He is a racing fan and still likes to bet on them in his retirement. He recalled days at the track, with the old Meadowlands being his favorite one. Keep reading!
Mr. Fletcher recently helped SRF take a special horse from the slaughter-line and get him to safety. He didn't own race horses, he may have just enjoyed the racing days of this particular one, the winner of $184,000, as the horse was 18 when he had helped him. Coincidentally, this gelding has the namesake of the town where Mr. Fletcher now resides in PA. Keep reading!
While the release was being written, Mr. Fletcher called back. He and his wife requested that $1,000 of the prize go to the two young ladies on staff who were the strength behind SRF during the height of the pandemic in spring. The farm owner of SRF's leased facility in NJ had closed the doors to potential adopters. SRF's Trainer and Adoption Director worked around this tough obstacle getting horses into foster care, and doing adoptions sight unseen, as SRF was frantic due fundraisers being cancelled indefinitely. "These two ladies are so deserving of this!" said Mrs. Bokman. "I look forward to letting them know, thank you so very much" The Fletchers went further with their kindness, "Give the remaining to the horses!" SRF is so very appreciative of such a generous gift!
The horses have been blessed with winners giving back, but of course it is not expected. The spirit of the holiday does magical things and a gift like this means so much!
A heartfelt thanks comes from all at SRF to the wonderful supporters of this important annual fundraiser, and to those who assisted by selling tickets on their own at the tracks, boarding barns, and to their family and friends.
From all the horses comes happy holiday wishes and all good things in 2021.
