Given a text book drive by harness racing’s newest Hall of Famer, Yannick Gingras, Blue Diamond Eyes was able to score a four-length romp in stakes record time capturing the $120,000 USS Indianapolis Memorial Trot Friday at Harrah’s Hoosier Park.
The 11th race for three-year-old pacing fillies saw Kobe’s Gigi (Peter Wrenn) explode to the early lead with the 3/2 favorite Hot Mess Express (John De Long) settling for the pocket seat briefly to the first quarter mile in :26.1.
De Long then sent Hot Mess Express to the lead before the half mile in :54.1. AlwaysB Laughin (Trace Tetrick) came first-over and Gingras with Blue Diamond Eyes followed second-over with Oakwoodanabella IR (David Miller) third-over.
Once they past the three-quarters in 1:22, Gingras swung Blue Diamond Eyes to the enter of the track and started eating up ground, pulling away from the field as Hot Mess Express began to tire. Blue Diamond Eyes went on to win by four open lengths in 1:49 over 42-1 long shot Kobe’s Gigi with Oakwoodanabella IR third.
The time of the mile was a new stakes record for the USS Indianapolis Memorial, surpassing the record of 1:49.1 set last year by JK’s First Lady.
