Cal Expo remembers Don Fowler with race
Sunday night’s Don Fowler Memorial Pace is named for the man who bought the Winner’s Circle Cafe here at Cal Expo in the early 1980s and ran it until his death in January of last year at age 64.
Known as “Big Don” to his family and many friends, he also took over the jockey’s room kitchens on the fair circuit in the 1990s.
His brother, Ken, is the starter here at Cal Expo.
“Big Don brought horsemen and management together from all aspects of racing in Northern California with his holiday dinners and get-togethers,” Ken said. “He also made it a point that no family would ever go hungry.
“The Fowler family would like to thank CARF, Watch and Wager and all the horsemen that supported Big Don’s kitchens over the last 40 years.”
