Cream Ridge, NJ – September 8, 2021 – Early this morning the sweet fuzzy nose of a newborn colt greeted the Standardbred Retirement Foundation (SRF). His momma came to SRF from a December 2020 rescue effort of many trotters and pacers, all tagged for shipment to the slaughterhouse.
In the 32 years of the non-profit SRF, it has seen several mares in foal come from these situations, but this mare, Modern Star, hid her little surprise very well. The colt was found in the field and was easily lead with his dam back to the barn (actually he was trotting as if he was several months old!).
Modern Star, now 14 years old (Sire: Modern Art; Dam: Miss Cam Star), earned over $100,000 while racing. Her last race was in 2014. Likely, she has been used for work and transportation in rural areas for the last 7 years…until SRF found her ready to ship to Canada.
The little colt’s sire is unknown. When calculating 11 months in foal, mom was already 8 weeks along when SRF took her in. Thanks to support from donors of the 2020 rescue effort, Modern Star had a chance at life, and this baby was able to greet the world today.
With this surprise, SRF is urgently seeking an experienced home for these two beauties. To offer a loving home to Modern Star and her colt, please contact SRF at 609-738-3255, or SRFadoption@gmail.com.Ā
