Undefeated Gaitway Guy (Delmarvalous) made it a clean sweep of the Delaware Standardbred Breeders Fund Series, winning the $100,000 Final for two-year-old harness racing pacing colts and geldings Monday, November 21, at Ballyās Dover Downs.
The 3rd race feature saw Delightinhisglory and driver Tim Tetrick shoot out to the early lead with Night Terror (Roger Plante, Jr.) getting the two-hole trip. The 1/9 overwhelming favorite, Gaitway Guy and driver Corey Callahan got away third as they reached the opening quarter in :27.4.
Callahan then pulled on the right line and sent Gaitway Guy to the front and he led the field to the half mile in :57.4 and then the three-quarters in 1:26.3. Ajayi and driver Montrell Teague tried a first-over move and was able to look Gaitway Guy in the eye but could not keep it going as they turned for home.
Down the stretch it was all Gaitway Guy and Callahan and they breezed home to win by three lengths in 1:55.3. Delightinhisglory was second with Ajayi third.
GAITWAY GUY REPLAY
It was the seventh straight win for Gaitway Guy. The homebred is owned and was bred by the GTY Stable of Englishtown, NJ and is trained by Jeff Smith. He paid just $2.10 to win.
In the $20,000 DSBF consolation, Notte’s Mist (Powerful Mist-A La Notte Hanover) overcame an eventful trip before drawing away to a decisive 1:55.3 win. He was embroiled in a three-way battle through a :27 quarter, ultimately taking back to third while Sweetest Swing pushed forward for control.
After a :57 half, Notte’s Mist was shuffled into midfield as Marshal Dillon mounted a first-over charge to the lead, but Trae Porter found room to slide the colt off the pegs at three-quarters in 1:25.4. Once clear, Notte’s Mist found another gear, overtaking Marshal Dillon at head-stretch and winning by a widening 7-1/4 lengths. Showdown Lynx rallied up the open stretch to collar a stalled Bad Boy Too for third.
Wayne Givens owns two-time winner Notte’s Mist, who paid $4.00 to win, for owner-breeder Reginald Hazzard.
